Saakashvili vows to make ‘people’s demands’ on Kiev authorities on October 17

Leader of the Movement of New Forces political party, former Odessa Region Governor Mikheil Saakashvili has arrived in Kiev on Tuesday where he and his supporters are taking part in a rally near the building of the Ukrainian presidential administration.

“On October 17, we will gather in a rally and make demands on this power,” Saakashvili confirmed earlier voiced plans of Movement of New Forces.

Until this term, Saakashvili said, he will be staying in Ukraine. “I will settle down in the heart of Ukraine, Cherkassy Region, and will gather people’s demands on the authorities,” he said.

On September 10, Saakashvili and his supporters stormed through a cordon at the Shegini border check point and barged into Ukraine from Poland. Twenty-two law enforcement officers were injured in the incident. In the city of Lvov, where Saakashvili arrived to meet with his party members and determine further actions, police filed criminal charges against him for illegally crossing the border, resisting police and disorderly conduct.

Ukraine’s Prosecutor General Yuri Lutsenko said later that Saakashvili would not be arrested under the border trespassing case. Moreover, he pledged the former Odessa region governor would not be extradited to Georgia until all legal aspects of Saakashvili’s stay in Ukraine are settled.
