The chairman of NATO’s Military Committee, Czech Army General Petr Pavel, and the chief of the General Staff of Russia’s armed forces, General Valery Gerasimov, met for talks in the Azerbaijani capital, Baku, on 7 September.
The meeting was the first at this level since NATO’s freeze in relations with the Russian Federation in spring 2014, following the annexation of Crimea and the opening of hostilities in eastern Ukraine. The discussions are the continuation of a telephone conversation between the two senior officers, which took place on 3 March.
The two sides exchanged views on current international security issues and concerns in Europe and the Middle East.
