Mexico: Protesters set vehicles alight and police deploy tear gas at teacher union demo

Members of the CNTE teachers union took to the streets of Oaxaca, Thursday, protesting Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto’s visit to the city.

Members of the union managed to blockade streets in the early hours of the morning, decrying educational reforms being brought in by Nieto’s government.

The unions argue that these reforms would unfairly disadvantage educators in rural parts of Enrique Pena Nieto, as new evaluations would not take into account the resources available to schools in more remote areas.

The president was scheduled to inaugurate the city’s Cultural and Convention Centre. He was accompanied by the Secretary of Economy Ildefonso Guajardo and Governor of Oaxaca Alejandro Murat Hinojosa.
