A senior politician of German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s conservative Christian Democrat Union (CDU) lashed out at Russia after her website appeared to be hacked Sunday.
Julia Klöckner, the leader of the CDU in the state of Rhineland Palatinate, said on Twitter: “Today a massive hacker attack on my homepage – with greetings from Russia. [As] if this has something to do with the election.”
A CDU spokesperson said about 3,000 emails requesting unauthorized access to administrator rights of Klöckner’s website. The spokesman said they were sent likely sent from a Russian server, but it remained unclear who was behind the attack.
Fears of hacking has German lawmakers worried ahead of the ballot later this month, after the election campaigns of French President Emmanuel Macron and U.S. presidential candidate Hillary Clinton were targeted by “massive and coordinated” attacks by Russian-affiliated groups.
