Before the war, Jews were a significant part of the population of the town. According to the Russian Jewish Encyclopedia, 1930 in Svaliava was 6535 Jews had a school teaching in Hebrew. In 1944, Svalyava Jews were deported to Auschwitz, where most of them were killed.
