Source: Syrian army broke largest ISIS stronghold

Government forces of the Syrian army and allied forces completely liberated the town of As-Sukhneh, having broken the largest bulwark of the terrorist group “Islamic State” * in the province of Homs, an informed source on the site told RIA Novosti.

“The Syrian army has liberated the entire town of As-Sukhne, one of the last strongholds of the ISIS in the province of Homs. Currently, sappers are inspecting the city for explosive devices and mines, which were installed by ISIS fighters,” the source said.

According to him, a few days before the final assault, parts of the Syrian army took the city in complete encirclement.

In the province of Homs, there is a de-escalation zone. Thanks to the ceasefire regime, the strategically important route Homs-Hama was previously opened.

Presidents of Russia and the United States Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump at the G-20 summit in Hamburg agreed on a truce in Syria. To date, three such zones have been established in the country: north of the city of Homs, in the area of East Guta and on the border of Syria with Jordan. The cease-fire regime does not apply to the formation of the IS * and “Djebhat an Nusra” *.

Armed groups in the north of Syria seek to contact Moscow to agree on another zone of de-escalation – in Idlib and the southern suburb of Aleppo. As Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has reported, negotiations on Idlib continue.

Armed conflict in Syria continues from March 2011. According to the UN, over 220 thousand people died during this time.
