Ex-speaker of the Georgian Parliament: Saakashvili started a war in S Ossetia

Former Speaker of the Georgian Parliament Nino Burjanadze in an interview with RT told about the events of August 8, 2008 in South Ossetia.

“Saakashvili started the war (the president of Georgia from 2008 to 2013. – Ed.). The responsibility for these tragic events lies primarily on him. Representatives of all media have declared me an enemy of Georgia. And still – despite the conclusions of the investigation of the EU commission, despite the statements of Heidi Tagliavini (Swiss diplomat, led the international commission to investigate the causes of the 2008 conflict) and a general understanding of what really happened – in Georgia it is inconvenient to say that Saakashvili started the war. Nobody wants to focus on this and speak on this topic,” Burjanadze said.

The conflict in South Ossetia unfolded after Georgian troops invaded the territory of the republic on the night of August 8, 2008 and fired the capital of South Ossetia, Tskhinval, from the Grad installations. After five days of hostilities, Georgian military forces were forced out of the republic.
