Seehofer: Merkel is the leader of the free world

Chairman of the CSU Horst Seehofer praised Chancellor Angela Merkel at a traditional summer reception for entrepreneurs in Ebersberg, Friday, saying there was no better person to lead the free world.

He spoke highly of the German chancellor in the context of the upcoming federal election, saying Merkel “is the leader of the free world and no one else can hold this free world together as well as her.”

SOT, Horst Seehofer, Chairman of the CSU (German): “And then someone asked Joachim Hermann, who is leading us in the federal election, the significant question, would we perform better without Angela Merkel in the upcoming election. That was the significant question that was posed. We’ve had our disputes in the last two years, but when it comes to this country, the union must come together. And therefore the decision was right, and I say to you, Angela Merkel, with whom I have just spoken to on the phone – I can also convey well wishes from her – is the leader of the free world and no one else can hold this free world together as well as her. Thus the decision was right.”

SOT, Horst Seehofer, Chairman of the CSU (German): “We have agreed [with the car industry] that the cars, namely the older diesel cars will be retrofitted and upgraded and this will be permitted by the car industry. And that at the same time the car industry will offer environmental premium, particularly by replacing old diesel cars with new cars.”

SOT, Horst Seehofer, Chairman of the CSU (German): “Because I want to avoid at all costs, we have over 15 million diesel cars in Germany, and I want to avoid at all costs that a few years ago we said to the population, buy diesel cars, because diesel is particularly environmentally friendly for the CO2 emissions and also fuel-efficient. And now the same politicians are saying we are not allowed to drive diesel cars in the city. That will be out of the question. There will be no ban.”
