European Union does not like new US sanctions law – Chizhov

The European Union does not like the new US law on sanctions, which concerns, including Russia, said in an interview with RIA Novosti Russia’s permanent representative to the EU, Vladimir Chizhov.

On Wednesday, US President Donald Trump signed a bill passed by Congress on new sanctions against Russia, Iran and the DPRK. The congress had more than enough votes to overcome the president’s possible veto, and the head of state was largely forced to sign the bill.

“The reaction of the European Union to this insane undertaking of Washington was stretched out in time, as was the process of passing the law, of course, the Europeans do not like this law.”

Earlier, the press service of the White House issued two statements in which the president criticizes the new law on sanctions and explains why he signed it.

After Trump signed the law on sanctions, German Foreign Minister Zigmar Gabriel called the new sanctions illegal, noting that with their help, the US wants to clear a place for the supply of US energy resources to the EU. In turn, commenting on the signing of the law, the head of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker said that Brussels will be engaged in protecting the economic interests of the EU.

Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev, in connection with the adoption in the US of the law on sanctions, said that Washington declared Russia a full-fledged trade war. And the press secretary of the Russian President Dmitry Peskov noted that Russia will defend its interests.
