The European Union can limit the access of US companies to the loans of European banks if the United States imposes new sanctions against Russia.
This is written by RIA Novosti referring to a diplomatic source in Brussels.
The interlocutor of the agency noted that this measure is one of the possible options.
Earlier, the Financial Times wrote that the head of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker called for an urgent discussion of the possible response of the European Union to the actions of the United States. According to the publication, Brussels intends to demand from Washington “a public or a written statement” that the new sanctions will not affect European interests. Another option involves the possibility of recognizing US restrictions as invalid on the territory of the EU.
It is expected that this issue will be discussed on Wednesday by the European Commission’s collegium.
On Tuesday, the US Congress will vote on a bill that will impose new sanctions against Russia. The document suggests that the president can impose sanctions on companies that are going to invest in the construction of Russian export pipelines more than five million dollars for a year or a million at a time, and also provide services or provide information support.
A separate point is the US intention to “counteract the construction of the Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline.”
The new measures immediately aroused sharp discontent in the EU. The Austrian Chancellor and German Foreign Minister saw in the bill a threat to the energy supply of Europe. Representatives of a number of large European energy companies also spoke against new sanctions.
