Philippines: Protesters march against martial law ahead of State of the Nation address

Thousands of protesters took to the streets of Quezon City, Manila, ahead of Filipino President Rodrigo Duterte’s State of the Nation Address in protest against the recently extended martial law, Monday.

Military control over the island of Mindanao was imposed to deal with an insurgency linked to the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS; formerly ISIS/ISIL) in the southern city of Marawi.

Martial law was enforced from May 23 for a 60 day period, but lawmakers voted overwhelmingly to extend it until the turn of the year, sparking a series of protests.
