President of the United States Donald Trump decided to stop the CIA program on weapons and military training of the anti-government opposition in Syria. The Washington Post writes about it, referring to sources. The specified program worked since 2013. Through armament, the US planned to exert pressure on Syrian President Bashar Assad, seeking his resignation.
The US has already criticized the program for its inefficiency. Sources say that Trump planned to abandon the failed program in June, following a meeting with CIA director Mike Pompeo.
The decision was also discussed with the National Security Advisor Herbert McMaster. At the same time, at the official level, the possibility of canceling the program has not yet commented.
