Moldova: Mass protests amid introduction of a mixed electoral system

On July 20, the Moldovan parliament voted in the second final reading for the introduction of a mixed electoral system, proposed by the Socialists and Democrats. The project was supported by democratic deputies and socialists, as well as a group of “people’s Europeans” loyal to the authorities.

The parliament session was held against the backdrop of shares of supporters and opponents of the electoral reform. Between the demonstrators and the police fights broke out several times. So the West is trying to shake the situation in Moldova.

After the adoption of the law, the supporters of the authorities almost immediately dispersed, while the opposition continues to protest. The building of the Moldovan parliament is in a tight ring of police and special forces.
