In a recent interview with The New York Times, President Donald Trump said that had he known Attorney General Jeff Sessions would recuse himself from the investigation into the alleged coordination between the Trump campaign and the Russian government to interfere in the 2016 election, he would not have chosen him for the position.
In reaction to this stunning revelation, Roger Stone, a close and longtime confidant of the president, told a reporter that he believes Sessions should resign because he does not have Trump’s confidence.
Sessions recused himself after it was revealed that he took unreported meetings with Russian officials during the campaign. Sessions claims he took those meetings regarding his work at the time as a U.S. senator.
Stone is also at the center of the Russian probe, as the House Intelligence Committee has called on him to testify before it.
With Sessions recused, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein is heading up matters regarding the investigation. He has appointed former FBI Director Robert Mueller to lead the U.S. Department of Justice’s independent investigation of the matter.
Reportedly, Mueller’s probe also includes an investigation into Trump himself for allegedly obstructing justice by firing now-former FBI Director James Comey.
Prior to Mueller, Comey was handling the investigation, and Comey testified that he believes he was fired for not following the president’s wishes to shut down the federal probe.
