The Golan Heights, already controlled by Israel for half a century, is one of the many disputed territories in the Middle East. From 1944 to 1967 they belonged to Syria, then during the Six Day War they were captured by Israel and subsequently annexed. The UN Security Council recognized the incident as illegal.
