Germany: Protests in Berlin as police evict squatters

Protesters gathered over night to demonstrate against the eviction of a squatted property on Friedelstrasse in Berlin’s Neukolln.

After the unification of Germany in the early 1990s, many districts of East Berlin fell into decay, and abandoned houses were illegally occupied.

Now the squatters refuse to leave the part of the apartment building that they seized in Friedrichshain. House 94 in Rīgaer Strasse is considered one of the last illegal squats in Berlin.
