Apparently so desperate for NATO membership, one eastern european country says it will change its name to get on the NATO free prizes behind door number two.
The Prime Minister of Macedonia Zoran Zaev said that for the sake of joining NATO, the country’s authorities are ready to change its name to the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM), which Greece insists on.
“There are two ways: either to solve the problem, or under a temporary name to join NATO and continue negotiations with Greece on the problem that Greece has with our constitutional name of the country, in connection with our integration into the European Union. They clearly understand that our aspirations in the EU are just as strong, “he says.
As Zaev noted, in the coming months, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg is expected to visit Macedonia, which “will open the door to the country for membership in the alliance.”
Currently, Greece is blocking Macedonia’s membership in NATO and the EU. Athens requires the republic to change the name, so that it is not confused with the Greek region of Macedonia.
Earlier, the Russian Foreign Ministry called on the West to stop interfering in the affairs of Macedonia.
