Washington, The Pentagon. American defense officials are acting on their own, unless directed otherwise, and creating a lot of problems for future US-Russian relations. According to Ukrainian and Georgian sources, the US is now also offering to train and organize Georgian Armed Forces against “Russian aggression.”
The Pentagon is ready to assist Georgia in implementing military reforms that included preperation and standardization of the nations armed forces for entry into NATO service.
This was stated in Pentagon Chief James Mattis’s letter to the Defense Minister of Georgia Levan Izoria, the text of which was published by the press service of the Georgian Defense Ministry for public consumption.
“I had the honor to meet with you at the February meeting of the NATO-Georgia Commission. I deeply appreciate your steadfast commitment to shared democratic values and bow to the sacrifices made by Georgia with us in Afghanistan,” Mattis wrote.
The NGC aims to deepen political political dialogue and cooperation between NATO and Georgia at all appropriate levels.
“It also supervises the process set in hand at the Bucharest Summit in April 2008, when the Allies agreed that Georgia will become a NATO member. To this end, the NGC seeks to underpin Georgia’s efforts to take forward its political, economic, and defence-related reforms pertaining to its Euro-Atlantic aspirations for membership in NATO, with a focus on key democratic and institutional goals.”
He stressed that he has great respect for the Georgian Defense Ministry’s plans to reform the army. “Reforms, of course, are rather complicated, but they are an essential component for your integration with the West. The US Department of Defense is ready to assist Georgia in this ambitious process of military reform,” Mattis said in the letter to his Georgian counterpart.
The NATO-Georgia Commission (NGC) was established in September 2008 to serve as a forum for both political consultations and practical cooperation to help Georgia achieve its goal of membership in NATO.
