Former South Korean President in custody on criminal charges

Seoul, South Korea. Former South Korean President Park Geun-hye was arrested Friday for allegedly conspiring to extort money from businesses and given prefered treatment to political allies within the South Korean government.

Police in the South Korean Capital have deployed more than 10,000 officers to secure areas near City Hall from opponents and supporters of Park, who have frequently been involved in violent clashes recently.

There were three South Korean nationals killed in violent clashes between Park supporters and police as recently as March 10th, when a demonstration turned deadly.

A large group with dozens of Park supporters gathered outside the prison where the former South Korean President is being held Saturday, many crying and bowing toward the correctional facility pledging to “protect” her.

President Park’s ability to govern was suspended by South Korean lawmakers after they impeached her this past December, following weeks of massive protests by citizens demanding her removal from office.
