US Senate restores Budapest memorandum

Buried in a draft US Senate resolution is a shocking proposal to restore the Budapest Memorandum of 1994.

Washington, DC. The US Senate has breathed new life into an old agreement between the United States and Ukraine. A Senate resolution seeks to advance the Budapest Memorandum as the official US position with respect to foreign policy on Ukraine.

The memorandum states the United States will gurantee the borders of the Ukraine and protect it from any foreign or domestic threat.

With this move, the U.S. Senate reaffirms the commitment of the United States to the Budapest Memorandum on security assurances and reiterates that it is the policy of the United States not to recognize the referendum of the Russian Federation in Crimea or local elections in Donbass.

The Senate also advocates further financial support for Ukraine, including strengthening economic sanctions against the Russian Federation and providing lethal military assistance to Ukraine.
