Syrian Gov’t Delegation to Take Part in Astana Talks in Mid-March

 

A delegation of the Syrian government will travel to Kazakhstan’s Astana for a new round of talks with armed opposition in mid-March, the government’s envoy to the UN, Bashar Jaafari, told Sputnik Saturday.

“Yes, we will come,” he said, when asked whether he was going to participate in the next meeting on Syria in Astana.

 

moreover, political issues may be discussed at the next round of talks on the Syrian settlement in Astana but ceasefire implementation and separation of terrorists from the armed groups of opposition will remain a priority, the head of the government delegation to the intra-Syrian talks, Bashar Jaafari, told Sputnik Saturday.

 

“Why not,” he said, asked whether political issues can be discussed in Astana.

 

“Also the implementation of the regime of the cessation of hostilities, separation of terrorists from the armed groups who signed the agreement, combating terrorism, monitoring border with Turkey… But the priority is the first four items,” Jaafari added.

 

The fourth round of UN-backed intra-Syrian talks between the government and opposition factions kicked off in Geneva last week and concluded on Friday.
