Germany intends to recognize the Armenian Genocide

The German parliament is actively promoting a diplomatic initiative that is likely to lead to anger Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, writes the Financial Times.

Bundestag is going to recognize the term “genocide” against the mass killings of Armenians during the First World War on the territory controlled by the Ottoman Empire, and officially condemn these actions.

Recognition of the Armenian Genocide by Berlin could seriously hit Chancellor Angela Merkel, the newspaper notes. Erdogan is angered with “disrespect of the European Union to Turkey,” and threatens to derail the deal with the EU on migration crisis. If the Bundestag reach the end, Merkel will be difficult to convince Ankara not to make sudden movements.
