New London mayor ignores link between migration, housing crisis

Labour’s party newly elected Mayor of London Sadiq Khan fails to see that inflow of migrants into the United Kingdom led to a housing shortage in the country, former candidate in London Mayoral election 2016 from the British National Party (BNP) David Furness told Sputnik on Monday.

Mayoral elections were held in London on Thursday. Khan received 56.9 percent of the votes beating Conservative Party candidate Zac Goldsmith who got 43.1 percent.

“He [Khan] refuses to see that excessive immigration has contributed to the many problems that London now has, such as a severe housing shortage,” the defeated ex-candidate, who campaigned under the motto of stopping “all further immigration” and bringing “local housing for local people,” said.

Resolving housing crisis in the UK capital was one of the most crucial points in all candidates’ promises with Khan and Goldsmith both pledging to provide new affordable homes to Londoners.

The former state minister for transport Khan, who is of Pakistani origin, became the first Muslim to hold the post. He is succeeding the Conservative Party’s Boris Johnson, who has been the capital’s mayor for the last eight years.
