ECHR ordered Ankara to pay €1 million to opposition party

European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) found Turkey’s violation of Article 11 of the Human Rights Convention, which deals with freedom of assembly, and ordered the authorities to pay the Republican People’s Party a million euros in compensation, according to the ECHR press release.

According to the materials of the case, the Turkish authorities earlier confiscated a significant part of the assets of the opposition party. At the same time, Ankara was guided by the decision of the Constitutional Court and the results of inspections carried out in 2007 and 2009, which ECHR found as violation of the law.

The Turkish authorities have repeatedly found themselves at the center of scandals. So, a few days ago the European Parliament adopted a resolution in which it expressed its concern about human rights violations in the country. In response, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan called the document a provocation.
