Kurdish troops repel IS attack, kill 6 jihadists in northern Iraq

Peshmerga forces have repelled an attack launched by the Islamic State, or IS, and killed six of its jihadists in Makhmour district, located in the northern Iraqi province of Nineveh.

Makhmour security official Rashad Kalali told EFE that jihadists launched an offensive against the Kurdish forces and the People Protection Units in Kudella village, in Makhmour.

The attack, which started with two suicide bombings, led to clashes that broke out on Thursday around midnight and lasted for five hours.

Kalali said that the six dead IS jihadists include the two suicide bombers, noting that a fighter from the People Protection Units died and 10 others were wounded.

IS conquered Mosul, capital of Nineveh, in June 2014 and is its main stronghold in Iraq.
