Peskov on Montenegro in NATO: expansion of the Alliance won’t remain unanswered

The Russian side has repeatedly noted the increasing expansion of NATO to the East, said the Russian leader’s spokesman. And such actions, he adds, can not remain without consequences. However to talk about specific steps is too early.

The expansion of the military infrastructure of NATO to the East cannot but lead to retaliatory actions from Russian side, commented Russian leader’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov Montenegro’s invitation to enter NATO.

On Wednesday NATO invited Montenegro to become the 29th member of the North Atlantic Alliance.

“On various levels Moscow has always noted that the continued expansion of NATO military infrastructure to the East, of course, can not but lead to retaliatory actions from the East, ie in terms of security interests and the interests of maintaining parity from the Russian side”, – Peskov told reporters.

When asked whether it is early right now to say what specific measures, Peskov said: “Of course”.

“Let’s assume that the president has not yet voiced his views concerning this issue, let’s still wait for some official statements that will follow, if they will follow from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, our military department or the head of state”, – Peskov answered to a question whether the reaction of the Federation Council position was agreed with the President.

He also said that the Kremlin doesn’t plan to make official statements on this subject in near future.

Earlier, the chairman of the Federation Council Committee on Defense and Security Viktor Ozerov said that Russia will refuse the implementation of joint programs with Montenegro in connection with its accession to NATO, including the sphere of military-technical cooperation.
