According to the Montenegrin president, his country’s membership in NATO is not directed against Russia, but is a “choice of a sovereign Montenegro”. At the same time, sociological studies show that less than half the country’s population supports this decision.
NATO invited Montenegro to become the 29th member of the alliance, said NATO spokesman Oana Lungescu in her Twitter.

Montenegro, which declared independence in 2006, was expecting invitation from NATO to enter the alliance. In order to obtain such an invitation, the country’s authorities have launched active work on the diplomatic front and carried out intense campaign to increase support for NATO membership in the country. However, sociological studies show that less than half the country’s population supports this decision.
Earlier, the Russian Embassy in Podgorica have repeatedly aired the Montenegrin authorities about Moscow concerns and spoke about the consequences for Russian-Montenegrin relations.
