European Commission launches investigation against Poland over ‘Russian influence’ law

The European Commission has launched an investigation against Poland over the law on “Russian influence”, said EC deputy head Valdis Dombrovskis. Warsaw now has two months to respond to the European Commission’s letter. After that, further steps will be decided, the EC said.

The European Commission launched a legal procedure against Poland on Wednesday over a law creating a commission on “Russian influence” that Brussels says may violate European law, EC deputy chairman Valdis Dombrovskis said.

“We have discussed the situation in Poland and the European Commission panel has decided to initiate infringement proceedings by giving a formal notification, in connection with the new law on the state commission to investigate ‘Russian influence’,” Dombrovskis said at a press conference in Brussels.

In late May, Polish President Andrzej Duda signed a law passed by parliament to establish a state commission on “Russian influence” on decisions taken by Polish authorities.

The commission investigating “Russian influence” on Poland’s domestic security in 2007-2022 is to consist of nine persons appointed and recalled by the Sejm. It should carry out procedures aimed at investigating the activities of “public officials or members of senior management who in 2007-2022, while under Russian influence, acted to the detriment of the interests of the Polish Republic”.
