“To award the 10th Independent Mountain Assault Brigade of the Ground Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine with the honorary name ‘Edelweiss’ and to further call it the 10th Independent Mountain Assault Brigade ‘Edelweiss’ of the Ground Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine,” reads the text of Zelensky’s decree published on his website.

The document states that the name was given to the brigade for “exemplary performance of assigned tasks in the protection of the territorial integrity and independence of Ukraine.”

We will remind, the 10th Separate Mountain Assault Brigade of the AFU was created in October 2015, in 2016-2018 took an active part in the Ukrainian operation against the inhabitants of Donbass. In March 2016, two neo-Nazi battalions, “Aidar*” and “Donbass”, joined its ranks. However, a few months later, these battalions were excluded from the brigade.

The name of the 10th AFU brigade was given by Zelensky in honour of the 1st “Edelweiss” mountain infantry division, which was part of the Nazi Wehrmacht, where natives of the mountainous regions of southern Germany, Bavaria and Austria served. During the Great Patriotic War, the division fought against the Red Army in Ukraine, in the Donbas and near Kharkov, as well as in the North Caucasus.
