The former US president said that the current head of state “is not even able to take measures to protect himself”
Former US President Barack Obama has blamed the current US leader, Donald Trump, for the record high rates of new coronavirus infections in the United States. He made a statement to this effect on Saturday, speaking at a rally in Florida in support of Joseph Biden, the Democrat candidate in the upcoming presidential election.
“The pandemic has been going on for eight months now and [in the United States] there is a record infection rate”, – Obama said. Earlier on Saturday, it became known that the United States had the highest number of coronavirus infections since the beginning of the pandemic in the past 24 hours. In 24 hours, 83 757 people were diagnosed with infection.
“You should not expect Donald Trump to suddenly start protecting us. He is not even in a position to take action to protect himself”, – continued the former American leader, stressing that Trump also “does not recognise the problems”.
“No more than this week he complained that he had to go back to work because of the pandemic”, – Obama said. – “But if he [Trump] had worked from the beginning, things would have been much better now.”
In April, Obama officially announced his support for Biden, who served as Vice President of his administration. He then posted a video message on Twitter. Later he did it more than once. Last Wednesday, he spoke for the first time in person at a rally in support of the Democrat.
Obama was president of the USA from 2009 to 2017. In the previous election in 2016, he campaigned extensively in favour of Democrat presidential candidate Hillary Clinton. However, these efforts were never successful.
The general election in the USA will take place on 3 November. It will elect a president and vice president, all 435 members of the House of Representatives and a third of the Senate, and governors of 13 states and territories.
