Assad believes Russia is restoring balance in international relations

For a quarter of a century, an imbalance of power has been observed in the system of international relations, the Syrian leader said.

Russia’s role is to restore equilibrium in international relations, from which most countries will only benefit. This opinion was expressed by the President of the Syrian Arab Republic (SAR) Bashar al-Assad in an interview with Zvezda TV channel, a fragment of which was published on the channel’s website on Friday.

According to the Syrian leader, an imbalance of power has been observed in the system of international relations for a quarter of a century. “The role of Russia is to restore the lost balance. Along with political and diplomatic steps on various international platforms, the build-up of the Russian military presence in the world plays an important role in this process” , – Assad said.

The SAR President added that the majority of countries, “primarily small ones, including Syria, will only benefit from a more balanced world order.” “One should not assume that Russia’s role in Syria is limited only to countering international terrorism,” he concluded.

In January 2017, a protocol was signed between the Russian Federation and Syria to an agreement on the deployment of an aviation group of the Russian Armed Forces on the territory of the SAR. It states that the external protection of the locations of the Russian military and the coastal borders of the logistical support point in the port of Tartus is carried out by the forces of the Syrian side, and the air defense, internal security and maintenance of law and order in the locations are in the area of responsibility of the Russian side. The agreement and the protocol are valid for 49 years from the date of signing, with the possibility of subsequent renewal for 25-year periods.
