Plahotniuc decided to play safe before parliamentary elections in Moldova

Realizing that the prospects for preserving the former power of the pro-Western political forces of the republic are few, the Democratic Party, headed by oligarch Vladimir Plahotniuc, began in a hurry reshaping the legislature literally months before the parliamentary elections.

Thus, the ruling party launched an initiative to reduce the number of MPs from 101 to 61, but this is only a cover for the key idea, according to which citizens of the country are supposedly given the right to deprive a parliamentarian of a deputy mandate if he “does not fulfill his promises”. In words, the initiative seems noble. But the mechanism of this idea is very doubtful. But, using demonstrative protests, Plahotniuc and his political forces can always get rid of the objectionable deputy.

“I guaranteed to organize the work of state bodies and entrust the power over parliament to the people,” Plahotniuc recalled already on the eve of the elections. “The work on improving the government is progressing, so today we raised issues related to parliament.”

Plahotniuc proposed to discuss his ideas in a referendum, and he wants to hold it together with the legislative elections scheduled to February 24, 2019.
