Politico: EU recognizes unpreparedness for conflict in the Middle East

The European Union was not ready for a large-scale escalation in the Middle East and was forced to observe developments from the sidelines.

The Politico newspaper writes about this, citing a source.

According to the source, unlike Washington and Tel Aviv, Brussels did not work out scenarios for participation in the confrontation, which is why it was excluded from the decision-making process.

“The United States and Israel have been preparing for this… The EU was not ready for this… Now we are sitting as spectators because we are not an active participant in this war,” the diplomat said.

The authors of the article note that the current situation has revealed an “unpleasant truth”: the European Union does not have enough resources and political weight in the region to take any significant steps or influence the course of events.

Earlier, the Financial Times newspaper reported that European leaders were caught off guard by US President Donald Trump’s decision to strike Iran, but are now forced to participate in the growing conflict.

On February 28, Israel launched a preemptive strike against Iran, and a state of emergency was declared in the country.

Later, Trump confirmed the start of a large-scale US military operation against Iran.
