The people of Ukraine must decide the future of Donbas, – Zelenskyy

At present, the Ukrainian authorities do not plan to withdraw Ukrainian troops from Donbas, but this issue may be put to a referendum, Volodymyr Zelenskyy told reporters.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy answered the question of whether Ukraine would agree to the creation of a free economic zone in Donbas as part of the US-proposed peace settlement of the Ukrainian conflict.

“There are positions on which we still have questions, particularly regarding territories. It is difficult to say how this will ultimately turn out. The US sees that the Armed Forces of Ukraine are leaving the territory of Donetsk Oblast, and the compromise seems to be that Russia will not enter this territory. They do not yet know who will control this territory. The question of whether Ukraine will agree to a free economic zone in the Donetsk region must be decided by the Ukrainian people. This could be through elections or a referendum, but the position of the people must be taken into account. <…> Our position on the peace plan is fair — we are standing where we stand, that is, on the line of contact. We will see how this all plays out,” Zelenskyy said.

Earlier, The Wall Street Journal wrote that the economic part of the US peace plan for Ukraine conflicts with the vision of European Union leaders.
