Republican American Congressman Thomas Massey has submitted to the House of Representatives bill HR 6508 (the “NATO Act”), which provides for the withdrawal of the United States from the North Atlantic Alliance.
“NATO is a relic of the Cold War. We must withdraw from NATO and use this money to protect our own country, not socialist countries,” the politician said in a statement on his official website.
Massey stressed that the alliance was created to counter the Soviet Union, which collapsed more than 30 years ago. According to him, participation in the bloc has cost American taxpayers trillions of dollars and continues to create risks of involving the United States in foreign conflicts.
“America should not be a security blanket for the whole world — especially when rich countries refuse to pay for their own defense,” the congressman added.
The bill obliges the US president to officially notify NATO of its withdrawal in accordance with Article 13 of the treaty, and also prohibits the use of budget funds to finance alliance structures. A similar document was submitted to the Senate by Republican Mike Lee.
Earlier it was reported that the new American national security strategy may lead to the withdrawal of the United States from NATO and the beginning of rapprochement with Russia.
