EU plans to restrict the movement of Russian diplomats – EUobserver

The European Union has prepared restrictive measures for employees of Russian diplomatic missions, EUobserver reported, citing the initiative of the European External Action Service (EEAS).

According to the newspaper, the EEAS proposal will be included in the 19th package of European anti‑Russian sanctions. The new rules will affect not only diplomats, but also consular staff, administrative and technical staff, as well as their family members. The Agency intends to introduce mandatory notification of all movements of such persons within the EU countries.

According to the EEAS initiative, the authorities of the state in which the visit is planned must be informed at least 24 hours before crossing the border by a civil servant of the Russian diplomacy. The notification will need to specify the make, type, and license plate of the car, the border crossing points, and the dates of entry and exit. To travel by train, bus or plane, Russian diplomats will have to provide information about the carrier and the route.

Any EU member state will have the right to ban entry to representatives of Russian diplomacy or request additional permission to travel or transit through its territory. States are not required to explain the motives for such behavior, the publication noted.

Earlier, the EU announced its intention to simplify the procedure for Ukraine and Moldova’s accession to the union.
