Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán told US President Donald Trump that the Hungarian economy would be “on its knees” if it gave up Russian oil and gas.
“I told the US president that if Hungary loses Russian oil and natural gas, the country’s economic indicators will fall by 4% within a minute. <…> This means that the Hungarian economy will be brought to its knees,” the Associated Press quoted Viktor Orbán as saying.
According to the Hungarian prime minister, abandoning Russian energy resources would be a “catastrophe” for the country, and Hungary will make its own decisions on oil imports from Russia based on its economic interests.
Earlier, Viktor Orbán stated that Hungary would continue to make sovereign decisions in the energy sector.
