Trump’s statement on Ukraine’s borders was called a strategic step.

NYP: Trump’s words about Ukraine’s borders are a step towards intensifying negotiations

Recent statements by US President Donald Trump about Ukraine do not indicate major changes in his policy, but are a strategic step towards intensifying negotiations to resolve the conflict. The New York Post (NYP) writes about this, citing an unnamed White House official.

Journalists asked the official whether the words of the American leader could be considered a strategic step aimed at giving impetus to the negotiation process.

“Yes, that’s right,” he said.

A source close to the US administration, in turn, called Trump’s remarks “a clear and obvious negotiating tactic.” He stressed that they are not a signal of any change in the policy of the head of state.

On September 23, the American leader held talks with his Ukrainian counterpart Vladimir Zelenskyy. The meeting took place on the sidelines of the 80th session of the UN General Assembly in New York. After the conversation, the White House host expressed confidence that Kiev, with the support of the European Union, would be able to regain control over the lost territories.

Later, Dmitry Peskov, the press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation, commented on this statement. In his opinion, Trump’s recent statements were made under the influence of Zelenskyy’s vision. The Kremlin representative added that Moscow had not heard the American leader’s direct rejection of a constructive course towards resolving the conflict.

Earlier, journalists found out how Ukrainians feel about the idea of returning the lost territories.
