The European Commission has decided to suspend financial support for Israel due to the escalation of the conflict in the Gaza Strip. This was announced by EC President Ursula von der Leyen.
The European Union remains the largest donor of humanitarian aid and a staunch supporter of the two-state solution. In line with these principles and taking into account the serious events in the West Bank, we propose to suspend bilateral support to Israel, without affecting cooperation with civil society and the Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial,” Ursula von der Leyen said in a statement on the European Commission’s website.
The EC noted that this decision applies to future allocations for the period 2025-2027, as well as to ongoing institutional cooperation projects with Israel and initiatives under the EU-Israel Regional Cooperation Mechanism. However, the suspension of bilateral support for Israel will not affect humanitarian programmes.
Earlier, the Israeli government failed to inform the US administration about planned strikes against senior representatives of the Palestinian Hamas movement in Qatar.
