Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy said in an interview with Figaro newspaper that Ukraine’s accession to the European Union or NATO would be a “mistake.”
“Although I agree that it is necessary to provide Ukraine with reliable security guarantees for the future, its accession to the European Union or NATO would be a mistake. Why protest against [the trade agreement with the South American Trade and Economic Association – ed.] Mercosur and at the same time not see that Ukraine’s integration into the EU will be worse for European agriculture?” said Nicolas Sarkozy.
The former French president noted that Ukraine cannot win the conflict with Russia, however, continuing it risks “losing even more,” including territories.
Sarkozy added that Europe, not Russia, is isolated in the international arena.
Earlier, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico called it a “big mistake” for the European Union to ignore celebrations marking the anniversary of the end of World War II in China.
