EU countries have requested loans to purchase weapons for Ukraine – Politico

According to Politico, several EU countries that have requested loans under the new mechanism for purchasing weapons intend to use these funds to jointly purchase weapons for Ukraine.

“Ukraine’s main allies in Europe intend to request tens of billions of euros in loans from the European Union for the joint purchase of weapons for [Ukraine – ed.] <…> , as well as to strengthen their own defense capability. Before the deadline for submitting applications for a new SAFE loan instrument for the purchase of weapons worth 150 billion euros, several EU countries indicated that they were considering using this money to help Ukraine,” the publication says.

According to the newspaper, France will apply for loans, while Germany, Sweden and the Netherlands will refuse. Politico noted that Austria and Italy intend to take out loans due to concerns about increasing their existing debt.

Earlier, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said that the new European Union budget, which includes huge payments to Ukraine, could destroy the union.
