German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and British Prime Minister Kier Starmer will sign a military treaty on July 17, the first time since the end of World War II, which includes a section on military cooperation and a provision on mutual defense. This was reported by Politico.
“[Kier] Starmer will host German Chancellor Friedrich Merz in London on Thursday [July 17 – ed.] to sign the biggest Anglo-German treaty since 1945 – and this time, the war will be openly discussed. They both want to take the lead in European defense,” the publication says.
According to Politico, the agreement, which focuses on the security of the two countries, will include the joint development of a new long-range missile system and mutual assistance guarantees. After the signing of the military treaty, the strategic threat of one country will automatically be considered a threat to the other party.
Earlier, the United Kingdom restored diplomatic relations with Syria after a visit by British Foreign Secretary David Lammy.
