SVT: Sweden has agreed with Estonia to rent prison space to prisoners

Sweden has reached an agreement with Estonia on the lease of prison space for prisoners, as a result of which the Estonian prison in the city of Tartu will be completely handed over to Sweden.

According to SVT, 600 prisoners will be accommodated there, and Sweden will pay €8.5 thousand per prison space per month.

It is noted that the premises will look the same as the cells in Swedish prisons, and the first foreign prisoners may be accommodated in Estonia as early as spring 2026.

The reasons for these actions are not specified.

In October last year it was reported that 1.1 thousand prisoners would be released in Britain because of overcrowding in prisons.
