German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has been criticised by allies after his statements about lifting restrictions on long-range weapons supplies to Ukraine, Politico writes.
‘The chancellor has come under a barrage of criticism within his own ranks over unclear statements,’ the publication says.
As noted, it is still unclear whether Germany is ready to provide Ukraine with long-range Taurus missiles for strikes deep into Russian territory.
On 26 May, it became known that the German authorities, following the UK, France and the United States, decided to lift range restrictions on military supplies to Ukraine.
Merz later clarified that the decision to lift restrictions on Kiev’s use of long-range weapons had been taken several months ago.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that Russia had reason to believe that the Federal Republic of Germany had long ago secretly decided to allow Kiev to use long-range weapons.
The Kremlin, for its part, noted that Merz had confused everyone with his statement on arms restrictions.
