Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has announced a 25 per cent duty on cars imported from the US if they do not comply with the terms of the free trade agreement in North America (CUSMA).
“The Canadian government is mirroring the United States by imposing a 25 per cent tariff on all cars from the United States that do not meet the terms of our CUSMA free trade agreement,” RIA Novosti quoted Carney as saying.
Carney emphasised that during the last telephone conversation he informed US President Donald Trump about Canada’s intention to respond to the imposed duties.
At the same time, he noted that Ottawa was developing a mechanism that would allow carmakers to avoid the duties on the condition that production and investments on the territory of Canada are preserved.
The day before, Trump said that he would impose duties on imports of passenger cars of 25% from 3 April.
