This was stated by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio after the meeting of the G7 countries.

Marco Rubio said that US President Donald Trump could strengthen sanctions against Russia but did not do so because he considered it more important to engage Russia and Ukraine in peace talks.

He also emphasised that the United States could not control Europe’s actions, but hoped for understanding on the part of European allies.

“Whatever the Europeans determine and decide about their sanctions, we can not control it, <…> because we are not part of the European Union and have no say there,” – said the US Secretary of State (quoted by RIA Novosti).

Earlier, Slovak MEP Luboš Blaga said that the cancellation of anti-Russian sanctions would help the EU more than Russia because the EU needs cheap Russian energy resources.
