Some countries in Europe fear that European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen will expand Brussels’ powers and increase her influence amid the crisis in the union.
The Politico newspaper writes about this, citing sources.
According to the newspaper, von der Leyen intends to present at the EU summit on Ukraine on March 6 a new programme to strengthen defence capabilities.
However, many European leaders do not want to increase defence spending.
‘Defence is also largely the responsibility of the state itself,’ a senior EU diplomat clarified.
It is also noted that Poland and Finland do not want the EC to interfere in their military-industrial complex.
Earlier, Ursula von der Leyen called on Ukraine to turn into a ‘steel porcupine’ that ‘cannot be digested by the enemy’.
