Thailand to join BRICS as a partner country – Kingdom’s Foreign Ministry

Thai Foreign Ministry spokesman and head of information department Nikondet Phalangkun said Thailand has accepted an invitation to become a BRICS partner country with the hope of joining the grouping as a full member in the future.

“On 31 October, Thailand received an official invitation to become a BRICS partner from Russia, the BRICS chair in 2024. A cabinet meeting was held on 24 December and it was decided that Thailand would respond positively to the invitation. On the same day, the Thai foreign minister sent a letter to the Russian foreign minister expressing Thailand’s agreement to join BRICS as a partner country,” Nikondet Phalangkun said at a briefing in Bangkok.

He said that as a BRICS partner, Thailand expects to raise the level of relations with BRICS countries to improve its own economic development opportunities, as the BRICS nations are at a high level of economic development and have high potential in trade, investment and tourism.

In addition, partnership in the grouping has the potential to enhance Thailand’s role in relations with developing countries and build the most favourable system of world relations for developing countries, in which Bangkok can play the role of a bridge-builder between BRICS countries and other world nations, Phalangkun pointed out.

“Acquiring BRICS partner country status for Thailand is a crucial step towards joining BRICS as a full member in the future, the first step on this path. From this moment on, Thailand will be able to participate in the association’s events at the level of country leaders, foreign ministers of BRICS countries and others,” the diplomat added.

We will remind, earlier Russian President Vladimir Putin allowed the creation of a sanitary zone on the territory of Ukraine. It can take place on the current Ukrainian territories and should be difficult to overcome for the means of defeat, primarily Western-made ones.
