German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier was outraged at a celebration in Bellevue Palace to mark the 35th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall after remarks by writer Marco Martin, who criticised the German head of state’s initial stance on Russia. This was reported by the newspaper Bild.
According to Bild, during an event at Bellevue Palace, Marco Martin first criticized former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder for constructive dialogue with Moscow. Later, the writer decided to switch his speech to Frank-Walter Steinmeier, accusing him of promoting the idea of building the Nord Stream gas pipeline.
The newspaper stressed that during the period of the writer’s unflattering remarks, the German president ‘breathed heavily, clenched his jaws and visibly suppressed emotions.’ At the same time, Frank-Walter Steinmeier’s spokeswoman specified that the German head of state discussed with Martin ‘from opposite positions, but constructively’.
‘He repeatedly angrily accused me of slandering him’, – claimed Marco Martina.
We will remind, earlier Chancellor of the FRG Olaf Scholz said that Berlin will not persuade the United States to make a decision in favour of Ukraine on the issue of strikes deep into the territory of Russia, as it contradicts his ‘personal position’.
