The US warned Georgia of the consequences of abandoning the Euro-Atlantic path

The US authorities have commented on the parliamentary elections that have just taken place in Georgia: the State Department has warned that certain consequences will await Tbilisi if the country does not return to the Euro-Atlantic path.

Washington urged Tbilisi to return to the path of Euro-Atlantic integration – otherwise certain consequences may await Georgia, said State Department spokesman Matthew Miller.

He commented on Saturday’s parliamentary elections in Georgia, which were won by the ruling Georgian Dream party.

The diplomat recalled that America has been appealing to Georgia throughout 2024 to abandon actions directed against democracy and return to Euro-Atlantic integration.

‘We do not rule out further consequences if the direction of the Georgian government does not change”- Miller

In addition, the State Department spokesman added that the US considers it necessary to investigate reports of election violations, which is also called for by a number of observers, both inside Georgia and international.

Recall, earlier today in Tbilisi an opposition protest rally was held. The main demand was voiced there – holding new elections to the Parliament. The rally in front of the legislative body lasted about two hours, after which the organisers said that it was over and most of the protesters went home.
